Heal All Wounds, Conceal Only When Necessary

Author: Kenetia Lee
Just recently I had a friend take advantage of me. Considering this was a friend that I was certain had my best interests at heart you could imagine the hurt that I felt. For a week and a half I spent my time in self pity, resigned and in a state of confusion. I was hurt, and I let this hurt stop me from proceeding with my love and passion of sharing with you what I know and love about beauty. Through careful reflection of my past, I could see how the feelings I was experiencing were from a previous wound that I thought had been healed. I may have lost a week and half, but I gained a better sense of who I am and have more passion and desire to help others move forward. As it turns out, open wounds can't be concealed. The same holds true for concealing your skin.

Open wounds, or flesh not healed, should not be covered up. The truth is, most makeup offered to consumers will not adhere to open flesh or wounds anyway. Let your skin heal before attempting to cover it. When faced with adversity, give yourself time and consideration to heal your wounds and find the lesson it has brought you so that you can thrive and not just get by.

Not all discoloration comes from blemishes or wounds. Other factors, like aging or the sun, can create changes in the coloring of our skin. As you may have guessed that not all concealers are for every blemish or discoloration, so don't attempt to use the same concealer for every discoloration you have. To simplify your hunt for the perfect concealer a little bit of color theory needs to be addressed.

Discoloration of the skin can range from green, red, yellow, blue and even violet. Take a moment to distinguish the color of your discolorations. Red and green are considered complementary colors. The same is true for blue and yellow. In other words, when put next to one another, each enhances the other. In the event one complementary color is put over the other, they cancel one another out. When addressing a blemish that appears to be in the green family, be sure to look for a concealer that has a red base(most likely it will appear to have a lot of pink in it). The exact opposite is true for red blemishes. In this case, search for a concealer that has a green base. Now you may be wondering what about those violet blemishes or discolorations seen on women of color from scaring or aging. The complementary color for violet is orange and when used properly will have discoloration truly disappear.

At any given time we could have one or more of these discolorations on our face. I would advise that we all keep a few different concealers around, to be on the safe side. If you have a favorite brand and they offer concealers that are not flesh tone but rather red/pink, blue, yellow or green, now you can purchase them with confidence knowing which one you can use for what type of discoloration.

Concealers have their purpose and when used properly will produce amazingly flawless skin. Oddly enough, pain has a purpose too. When faced with hurt, betrayal or pain, take the time to find the greater good in it all and take the necessary time to heal. Coming soon I will address what formula of concealers or foundations would work best on different skin types.
