Flea Markets... Beats Taking it to the Dump

Author: Bill Thomas
The first time I tried my hand at selling at Flea Markets, I was about 20. A friend and I decided that we were going to make a bunch of money doing this. By the way, I was Bill and he was Zill, so we called ourselves Bill and Zill. This is before we realized there was such a thing as imagination.

Anyhow, we went to one of the local wholesalers, and proceeded to spend about $500 loading up on flashing caps, lighters, cheap knives, etc. That weekend we got up early, went over to the market, and set up our 'goldmine'. Sales were pretty slow, so I decided to wander around and look at some of the other merchandise. As I strolled through the grounds, I noticed that about every other table I passed had some of the same stuff that we were selling, and worse, they were selling it for less than what we paid for it!

Well, we wound up making about $20 profit that day so we figured after expenses we made about $.40 an hour.

Probably because of that day, I never was much for selling at Flea Markets. I've been to plenty to buy, but not to sell. Something about standing around for eight hours having someone trying to get the item for a quarter less because the person in the stall two booths up was selling it for half a buck doesn't do much for me.

Nevertheless, I have friends who love going to Flea Markets and some who do quite well at it. Just not for me. As my neighbor says, "it sure beats taking it to the dump, and getting four flat tires". I can't argue with that.
